An Area-Based Metrics to Evaluate Risk in Failure Mode and Effects Analysis Under Uncertainties

Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is a widely used, powerful tool to identify assess potential failure modes in products make more reliable. Due the complexity of lack knowledge, FMEA involves many uncertainties practice. In previous studies, numerous modified methods based on fuzzy logic Dempster-Shafer (D-S) evidence theory have been employed address these uncertainties. These studies focus how handle reliable prioritization risk priority numbers (RPNs). However, not sufficiently examined are present resulting RPNs. To better model process various types FMEA, two new area-based metrics constructed this paper. One interval area metric (IAM), which used RPN representation. The other dimensionless uncertainty (DUM), measure there RPN. IAM rank risks modes, DUM modes. Then, an expert system presented qualitatively evaluate DUM, can help users intuitively judge whether further investigation should be performed alleviate epistemic each mode. Finally, practical evaluation case regarding grinding wheel numerically controlled (NC) machine provided demonstrate application effectiveness proposed FMEA. study shows that calculation programs do require any assumptions or need conflict among experts. addition, method only give accurate rating mode, but also designers see grade RPN, useful them understand results.
